Star
Inn, Sulgrave, Northamptonshire. An old, old pub in the village that boasts
the family home of George Washington, and a visit
here should involve dropping in on both this characterful
pub and the Washington spread, which is open to the
public.
Knatchbull
Arms, Stoke St. Michael, Somerset.
A question burned in our minds: What exactly is a Knatchbull?
Well, it is the family name of the local landed gentry.
The pub itself was the site of a WWII meeting of more
Generals than any other meeting outside the United States.
It is a beautiful pub, steeped in history. Remember
to try the cider!
George,
Bathampton, Somerset.
A beautiful pub in a perfect location, on the banks
of the picturesque Kennet & Avon Canal. Find your
way through the rambling old George Inn, then sit outside
and watch narrowboats plying up and down the canal.
Kings
Arms, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.
A perfect-looking pub, clearly an old coaching stop,
and now catering quite happily to tourists and locals
alike in the antique Mecca of Stow. A Wold, by the
way, is an old English word for a small hill. Try
the beer (but avoid the cider).

Inn, Geddington, Northamptonshire.
So much to see in such a small village. A fascinating
church, a rare Eleanor Cross, and a beautiful ancient
packhorse bridge. The pub is great too!
Alford
Barn, Alford Crossways, Surrey.
A very curious pub, lots of little rooms and ancient
timbers, with lots of garden space out front. Local
beers on offer.
Rat
& Parrot, Woking, Surrey.
Huge, cavernous, new building catering to an urban crowd,
but it is certainly an experience for veteran pub-goers.
Part of a national chain, they offer consistency and
relatively loud music. The bar can be three-deep for
the entire evening, so clearly they have found an audience.
Kings
Arms, Marazion, Cornwall.
We could not help but wonder: Here is a beautiful
old pub, in a gorgeous Cornish village, close to the
spectacular St. Michael's Mount, and it was so quiet
in here. A relaxing pint or two and a walk through
the village is one of the finer things in life! A
lovely little pub.
Ale
House, Bath, Somerset.
For a town pub in a tourist town, this pub is refreshingly
free of tourists and indeed has a very strong local
flavor. Within easy walking distance of the main sights
of the historic City of Bath.
Countryman,
Staverton, Northamptonshire.
A great-looking pub with all the promise of all the
qualities we find in these rustic country pubs. We hope
for great service, we hope for local ale that tastes
wonderful. We hope we find it occasionally.
